The Great Deleveraging March 2008 The current U.S. credit crisis may be much more than just a nasty bout of illiquidity preceding a recession. Rather, it may mark the end of an era of ever-increasing leverage, promoted by globalization, expanding financial markets, and investment and technological innovations. These trends have been self reinforcing, as the financial sector -- the enabler of leverage -- has played a central role in promoting economic growth. Thus, the effects of this deleveraging countercycle are potentially more damaging than those seen in recent credit crises.
